A series of compositions inspired by Lime tree leaves.

Size 24x24 cm and 24x36 cm

Sumi ink and Hard pastels on Arches paper

Nov. 2021

These artworks were created by cutting larger sheets.

I chose a square format. While cutting out the paper, I carefully observed how the various elements (forms and spaces) were distributed on the sheet. I gave importance to full and empty spaces, to the contrast between marks, to asymmetrical forms and diagonal lines coming out from the edges. The aim was to give dynamism to the composition and to suggest the movement of falling leaves.

If well thought out, the cut can enhance the composition, it can change the content of an image or sharpen the view of it.

In order to obtain different marks, I used various tools: the brush for larger and softer backgrounds, the rulingpen for stronger lines and a simple awl to scratch the paper and obtain thinner marks.

Robert Henri -The Art Spirit -1923
